Ride of Silence
WEDNESDAY, MAY 20th “Ride Of Silence” (7pm) Cyclists around the world will participate in a unique ride to honor those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. The rides worldwide begin at precisely 7:00 pm. It is a short ride (about 10-12 miles) at a slow pace (12mph) -- all done in complete silence. Typically, riders wear an armband -- black on those riding in memory of someone killed; or red on those riding to honor someone who has been struck and survived, or if they have been struck themselves before.
A Marietta route has been planned this year. The details on the exact route in Marietta are attached (must be logged in to review attachments). The route is 11.3 miles and will start at the City parking deck at 205 Lawrence Street, just off the square in Marietta. Parking for the ride will be on the right side of the upper level of the parking deck. This is not a typical parking deck and will accommodate most cars with bikes on top.
This ride will be conducted as a courteous mass ride. It is a no-drop ride. Rules of the road will be followed with no more than 2 cyclists riding abreast. There are no registration fees and no police escort is planned. The roads to be traveled have light traffic at 7 p.m. and it is a moderately easy course. A 12 mile per hour pace will be maintained by all riders.
A possible dinner following the ride is also being planned at one of the local restaurants on the square if enough people are interested.
For more information regarding the concept behind the ride please go to www.rideofsilence.org.
Please sign up below, and list the people or person that you will be riding in memory or in honor of. We will read the list before we roll on the ride.
If you cannot make the ride but want a name read before the ride, please send that to Celeste in an e-mail.
