East Cobb Start for Georgia Rides to the Capitol
Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010Georgia Rides to the Capital

WHO  - -     Metro Atlanta Mayors Association (MAMA), GEORGIA BIKES!, and event sponsors </a> will host nearly 2,000 cyclists from the metro Atlanta region. Police-escorted rides will depart from Decatur and Roswell led respectively by Mayor Bill Floyd  and Mayor Jere Wood as well as other mayors and public officials from the region. East Cobb link-up will be escorted by Cobb County Police to the Fulton County line.

WHAT  - -  During the fifth annual "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event, cyclists will embark on rides to the Capitol in order to raise support for the newly-introduced 3-Feet Safe Passing Bill (HB 998); improved conditions for cycling, including the development of regional systems of both on-road bicycling facilities  and multi-use-trails. The event is free and open to the public but participants must pre-register at  Georgia Rides To The Capitol's web site. East Cobb riders please also enroll at the bottom of this page.

WHY -- Support HB 998, 3-Feet Safe Passing Bill. Which will improve the safety on Georgia’s roadways for cyclists by creating a legally required safety zone of 3 feet to be maintained between cyclists and motor vehicles.  This bill was introduced in the State Legislature in January. With your support we can help make this bill become law.

MAMA also intends to raise awareness of the benefits of bicycling as an important form of transportation; a beneficial economic development and tourism tool; an excellent way to maintain health and fitness;  and a great sport and family activity.

► Linkup with the Roswell Riders as they cross the Chattahoochee River

► Depart promptly at 8:45 am. Very comfortable 12 MPH pace

► Park across the street at the Mount Bethel church near the school busses

► Pre-ride shop wrenches will be available

► Local Press and Government Officials will give us a send-off

► Distance to link-up with the Roswell group on the Chattahoochee: 8 miles

► Total Distance to the Capitol: 27.3

► Route to the link up location:  http://tinyurl.com/ydbj3r7

► Route with Roswell Group to the Capitol: http://www.georgiaridestothecapitol.org/routes.php (Select Roswell: Map and/or Cue Sheets)

► Estimated time of arrival at the Capitol is 11:40 a.m. Once the riders arrive, BikeMS will be providing one of their famous Rest Stops (a traditional cycling-event-ride, break-point-style/SAG stop with fruits, snacks, sports drinks, etc.). Shortly thereafter, there will be about 30 minutes (estimate) with elected officials speaking. Once that’s  finished, it over.  I’d say the total time you could hang around would be max one hour. Probably less.
