Joe Seconder, Founder and Acting President

Are you a talker or a doer? After spending six years in Europe (Zurich and Copenhagen), regaining his love of cycling and returning to the 49th most bicycle friendly State in the nation, Joe decided to start up a bicycling advocacy organization in Cobb County –not only for single contentious issues, but for the long-term with a broad based coalition. Simply put, he wants to be able to take his wife out on casual cruising rides where she will feel safe and comfortable. Joe looks at the model in Roswell. In five years they went from zero to Bike Friendly. With an advocacy organization, Bike Cobb can steer the county in that direction, too.

Outside of the cycling world, Joe served 22 years in the Army Reserve & National Guard, retiring at the rank of Major. In 2003 he was on active duty with his unit in Kuwait and Iraq. Presently he is a self-employed IT Consultant specializing in PeopleSoft HR systems.

Joe is very excited about the future and looks forward to continuing to build the Bike Cobb organization.

Thomas Lash, Vice President
Thomas Lash current vice-president of Bike Cobb has been an active promoter of bicycling since his early childhood in Ohio. He once rode solo across the US in the 70’s using youth hostels and Bike Centennial routes. He also rode in many places that either had bike friendly environments like the Pacific Northwest and Southern California or primitive locations like Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. After living in Orlando Florida and Marietta Georgia and fighting urban sprawl he has focused his efforts to promoting rides from ones home along with the promotion of Multi-Use Trails like the SCT in Cobb County. His main goal is to link his Current Insurance Practice with the development of Community Awareness of Bicycling as a core element in ones wellness program to lower overall health care cost. He is currently involved in his Home owners associations, Health Care Reform and Health and Wellness Programs including Safe Routes to School. Thomas
Celeste Burr, Secretary
A real estate paralegal by trade, Celeste got into road cycling in 2003 while training for her first triathlon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team in Training. Celeste quickly learned that there are not enough safe places to ride a bike for training or recreational purposes in East Cobb. Because of this she got involved in the fight to keep Columns Drive open for cycling and has since then been looking for better and more productive ways to promote safe cycling in East Cobb so she was eager to join Bike Cobb when the group formed in 2008. Celeste has given up triathlons and devotes most of her free time to cycling. In addition to doing Team In Training century events she is also a member of The Coca-Cola Cycling Club and she leads and does other organized rides, many of which benefit local charities. And because she also thinks cycling is important for the environment and the economy, she would love to be able to save money and gas by riding her bicycle to work. Hopefully through her involvement with Bike Cobb she can help make this dream a reality at some point in time in the future. Celeste Burr

Dan Thornton, Treasurer
Dan was born in Florida, but has lived in Marietta most of his life. He worked at his parents store, formerly a BMX shop, and has been in the family business ever since Free-Flite Bicycles first opened in 1978. Dan likes road racing the most and his favorite bike is a TREK Madone SSL. His proudest accomplishment was participating in the 1995 USCF Masters and winning the 35+ State Champion in both road race and criterium. Dan takes very seriously his role in cycling advocacy and education. He is currently an active member of NBDA, NGBDA, SORBA, IMBA, and YaYa Bike! Dan
Brian Genter

I have been a Bike Cobb member from Marietta since mid 2008. I work at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Marietta, GA. I have lived in the area for eight years with my wife, Kamila. I have a daughter Arriana who is 13 and a five year old son Alexander.

I have been cycling seriously since 2004. I entered the sport while cross-training as an endurance runner. I experienced some shin splints in preparation for my first half-marathon in March 2004, and did some cycling to allow my injury to heal while keeping my base aerobic fitness. At that point I discovered duathlons (run-bike-run races) and gave them a try. I’ve loved them ever since trying my first one in May 2004. I qualified and participated in the Long Course Duathlon World Championships in 2007. I like the change you get during a duathlon race, especially between the bike portion and the second run.

Having made my entry into cycling for training purposes, I found a deep community of caring people using the bike for exercise, transportation, and even for social engagement. I felt right at home on the bike. I still ride my first major bicycle purchase which is a used Cervelo P2K. I’ve grown to regularly ride in 2 of our area’s charity bicycle rides, 2 of our advocate bicycle rides and have sampled many of the area’s century rides. I even commute to work often on the bike.

In a few of my commutes, I had what I considered to be close calls with vehicles and drivers. When I first heard about Bike Cobb, I knew of the importance and need for such an organization and joined right away. We still have a long way to go to where I’ll be satisfied, but I already feel that cycling is a little safer on the roads in Cobb County. There is strength in numbers and I make sure I’m seen in support of the safe cycling cause, whenever its appropriate. I believe we have made a difference and will continue to do so.

In 2010, I decided to try off-road cycling. I purchased a used hard tail mountain bike and have enjoyed several trails in and near Georgia. With Blankets Creek so close by, that is the park I visit the most for my MTB activities. Although there are other organizations to help preserve the off-road bike trails, that topic fits under Bike Cobb as well.

I am excited to serve on the Bike Cobb Board. I hope you will join with us to help make a difference in Cobb County and wherever else we can.

Brian

Dale Moller, Membership
Dale is a roadie and has enjoyed bike riding dating back to his childhood years when he’d ride his bike everywhere, including his grandmother’s house, school, Little League practices and games and the YMCA, then casually during college. He enjoys doing 100-mile ‘century’ rides and has done events in Lake Tahoe, Chattanooga and the Silver Comet Trail. As a resident of east Cobb since 1997, he has enjoyed seeing the increase in the number of cyclists and often rides with a neighborhood group of guys in or around the east Cobb, Roswell and Alpharetta areas. As Membership Director of Bike Cobb, his goal is to increase the group’s size in order to increase the collective voice in promoting safe cycling and increasing cycling facilities throughout the county When not out riding, Dale stays busy with his 15 year old daughter and 11 year old son. Dale
Steve Berrey, Web Guy and CRM Apps

Steve is an avid road cyclist, triathlete and mountain biker, living in the Cobb County part of Roswell. Having watched Roswell transform into a bicycle friendly city firsthand, and reaping the benefits of living in that community, he is looking to help expand that work into the Cobb area – in better bike trails, education, signs, and changes to the way the driving public think about cyclist.

When not riding a bike, Steve is a technology executive and entrepreneur for entertainment and Internet technologies.

Chuck Hrushka
Born & raised in Virginia, Chuck has lived the last 24 years in Marietta & Cobb County. From an early age, biking & cycling has been a passion for him. Meager beginnings with an inexpensive English Racer up to his current road bike, Chuck states that sitting in the saddle and feeling the wind go through his hair is something he loves and never tires of.

Chuck has participated in several century rides and has also chaired the Premiere Sponsorship as Team Captain for the Tour de Cure here in Atlanta for the American Diabetes Association. You will often see him riding to & from his sales position in the Cycling department at the Kennesaw REI, riding on the Silver Comet or just around the Kennesaw Mountain National Park area where he lives.

As with any passion, Chuck is taking this next step and becoming involved by taking his role as a cycling advocate and representing his community and county. With more individuals and families cycling as a serious sport or just for fun, safety and a broader awareness of bicycling to the general public and most importantly to our government officials is not only needed but is a necessity.

Carrie Kane
Carrie is a third-grade teacher in Cobb County who over the past two years has been commuting over 30 miles each day to work. This year Carrie started competing in triathlons. She loves to ride her bike with her husband, two grown children, and her dad. Carrie realizes that present conditions are too dangerous for her own school children to ride to school, and she’d like to help change that. She believes that education and advocacy for bicyclists and the public are vital to the future of our community.
Bill Ruhsam
Bill has been cycling in and around Atlanta since 2007. His work makes him think about bicycle and pedestrian safety every day; being a cyclist makes him more of an advocate. Some of Bill's initiatives has been pushing for additional cross-county connectivity by making it easier to move between subdivisions. He lives in Northeast Cobb county with his wife and his cat and has been a Braves fan since birth.

As a recreational cyclist and a triathlete, Bill has been looking for ways to get cycling more into the public mind. He has two bikes that are worth more than his car and he always wears his helmet.

Johann Weber
Johann is relatively new to bicycle advocacy; he came to Georgia from his native Oregon and found that bicycling was a more challenging enterprise than before, and wanted to get involved in making it better! This and an academic interest in bicycle and pedestrian policy led him to attend the inaugural 2010 Georgia Bike Summit, at which point a whole exciting new world opened up!

He is currently a graduate student at Georgia Tech, where he is studying environmental policy with an emphasis on sustainable transportation. He is a founding member of Georgia Tech's campus-wide committee for the improvement of bicycle infrastructure (BIIC), and will be serving as Advocacy Intern with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition this summer.

Johann has a B.A. in Sociology and Philosophy from the College of Wooster (Wooster, OH) with academic experience in environmental philosophy, statistics, and social theory, as well as work experience in environmental education, campaigning, print media, and parks and recreation. He is passionate about both commuter and recreational bicycling, and believes that the bicycle is a crucial component of a healthy, happy, and mobile city.
